Between 2022 and 2026, an Iveco Daily 4x4 (built in 2008) was converted from a commercial vehicle into a full-fledged, self-sufficient expedition vehicle. The vehicle proved its unstoppable reliability during a crossing of Africa, among other things.
Self-sufficient Energy Supply & Electrical Engineering
The heart of the conversion is a powerful electrical installation designed for weeks of self-sufficient standing:
- Energy Storage: 12.8V 300Ah (3840Wh) LiFePo4 accumulator.
- Solar Power: 330W solar panel with high-efficiency MPPT solar controller.
- AC Network: 3000W inverter for supplying 230V devices.
- Infrastructure: Service water pump for the internal system as well as an outdoor shower.
Interior Fit-out & Innovation
Special attention was paid to a space-saving and off-road capable construction:
- Floating Beds: Two beds (90cm x 2m) suspended from the ceiling via a rope system. This allows not only folding up for more space during the day but also easy leveling of the sleeping surface on sloping ground.
Technical Restoration & Off-road Modifications
To make the vehicle fit for extreme terrain (3 differential locks, 24 gears), a massive technical overhaul was carried out:
- Chassis & Tires: Conversion to massive 37x12.50R17LT Radar Renegate R/T tires on 17x9 inch steel rims. This included the necessary tachograph adjustment and individual TÜV approval.
- Cooling & Engine: Replacement of radiator, intercooler, engine fan, as well as various cooling and vacuum lines.
- Wear Technology: Complete renewal of the brake system (ventilated discs at the front, drum mechanism at the rear incl. lines), wheel bearings, starter, and starter battery. The cover image shows the brake fluid immediately after purchase: Normally, this should be transparent to slightly yellowish. A black coloration signals that it has already absorbed an extreme amount of water due to its hygroscopic effect. In heat, this can lead to sudden gasification and thus total failure of the brake.
- Safety: Installation of a front winch and Nato jerry can holders.
The Iveco is the result of a symbiosis of heavy mechanics, modern electrical engineering, and creative interior design – a vehicle that continues where others have long since had to turn back.
